Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics
History
The journal Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics was founded in 1970 at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv by
the prominent mathematicians of world-wide recognition Anatoliy Skorokhod and Mykhailo Yadrenko. The journal was published as the Ukrainian
journal at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv followed by its republishing in English by the American Mathematical Society as a cover
to cover translation. Starting from Issue 102, 2020, the journal Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics is published jointly by
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and American Mathematical Society as the original journal in English.
The Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief for 1970-2011 was academician of NAS of Ukraine Professor A.V. Skorokhod (1930-2011), Editor-in-Chief
for 2011-2020 was academician of NAS of Ukraine Professor V.S. Korolyuk (1925-2020),
Deputy Editor-in-Chief for 1970-2004 was corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine Professor M.I. Yadrenko (1932-2004),
Deputy Editor-in-Chief for 2005-2020 was Professor Yu.V. Kozachenko (1940-2020).
Professor Yuriy Kozachenko was one of the leaders of the Kyiv school of probability theory and mathematical statistics. He was a worldwide known mathematician with his main scientific achivements related to the study of the properties of random processes in various functional spaces, simulation and statistics of random processes, the theory of wavelet expansions of random processes. Yuriy Kozachenko is one of the founders of the theory of subGaussian processes and random processes from Orlicz spaces. He initiated a research aimed at determination of accuracy and reliability of computer simulation of random processes.
Yuriy Kozachenko is the author of over 300 scientific papers, several textbooks and 12 monographs including "Metric characteristics of random variables and processes" (1998, together with Buldygin V.V.), which was reprinted in English in 2000 by American Mathematical Society and which has retained through years its popularity among the specialists in the theory of stochastic processes and their applications.
Yuriy Kozachenko graduated from Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and since 1967 he worked at the University and it can be said that he devoted all his life to the University. He was a remarkable lecturer and teacher for many students, he conducted active scientific, organizational, educational and social activities. He was Deputy Chairman of the Specialized Scientific Council of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, a member of the editorial boards of seven academic journals.
As a scientific supervisor Yuriy Kozachenko had prepared 42 candidates of sciences (PhD degree) and was a scientific consultant of 7 Doctoral theses (Doctor of Science degree). In the last years 3 more dissertations for Doctor of Science degree were prepared for defence under his surevision. His students continue active research activities at leading universities and institutions around the world.
Yuriy Kozachenko supported numerous international links with known scientists from Australia, the UK, Italy, Canada, USA, Finland, Croatia, Sweden and other countries, actively participated at many international conferences and projects.
Yuriy Kozachenko was distinguished with many awards for his scientific achievements. In 2003 he was awarded by the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology; in 2005 he was awarded by the title of "Honorary Doctor of Uzhgorod National University", in 2009 – by the title of "Honored Professor of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv", in 2010 – by the title of "Honored Personality of Science and Technology of Ukraine", in 2013 he won M.M. Krylov prize of the Presidium of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 2018 for his personal outstanding scientific and pedagogical achievements he was awarded by The Order of Merit (Ukrainian: Орден «За заслуги») (Distinguished service) of third class.
Yuriy Kozachenko generously shared his deep and wide-ranging knowledge, his inspiration by mathematical science and his passion to solving mathematical problems in probability and statistics with students, postgraduate students, doctoral students, friends and colleagues.
Yuriy Kozachenko will be always remembered as outstanding scientist, talented teacher and an example of great personality, his disciples and followers will continue and develop the researches started by him.
The outstanding mathematician of worldwide recognition, Volodymyr Korolyuk was one of the founders of the Kyiv school of probability theory, mathematical statistics and cybernetics.
The scientific research of Volodymyr Semenovych Korolyuk covered various areas of probability, mathematical statistics, theory of stochastic processes and cybernetics.
V.S.Korolyuk was one of the first scientists in Ukraine, who assessed the theoretical and practical importance of semi-Markov processes and attracted the attention of his students for their research and application. The results of these studies launched a new direction – the theory of asymptotic phase merging and averaging of random processes. V.S.Korolyuk also launched another new direction – asymptotic analysis of random evolutions.
The mathematical heritage of V.S.Korolyuk includes 22 monographs and about 20 textbooks, most of which are reprinted in foreign languages; more than 280 scientific research papers.
Under his supervision, 43 students defended their PhD dissertations, 14 – Doctoral dissertations.
V.S.Korolyuk combined fruitful scientific work, teaching and scientific-organizational activities. During a long period of time he lectured the theory of programming, probability theory and mathematical statistics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv at Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. Within a group of famous experts, he was awarded the USSR State Prize (1978) for the creation of “Encyclopedia of Cybernetics”. In addition, V.S.Korolyuk was awarded the Glushkov Prize (1988) and Bogolyubov Prize (1995). In 1998 he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Figure of Science and Technics of Ukraine.” In 2002 V.S.Korolyuk was awarded the Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and Medal by the name of M.V.Ostorgradsky, and in 2003 – the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
Volodymyr Korolyuk shared his inspiration by mathematical science and his passion to solving mathematical problems in probability and statistics with colleagues and numerous students and followers, his scientific influence has widely spread also to many specialists in applied areas who use probability and statistics methods for their research.
Volodymyr Korolyuk will be always remembered as talented scientist and pedagogue, his ideas and scientific heritage has had a great impact on contemporary mathematical science, his disciples and followers will continue and develop the researches started by him.
